Challenges in Big Data

With Challenge, Comes Opportunity for Competitive Advantage

There is no doubt, we have entered an era of big data. With all the data we generate, from smart devices, internet browsing habits, and even the devices we wear, we are generating a lot of data. All of this data has the potential to help improve the way we live, work and play. However, with all the promise it holds, it also has many challenges. For example, how do we store all the data we collect? Once we store it, how can we turn that data into actionable, and meaningful information and ultimately knowledge? How do we turn all of this data into a competitive advantage for our business or organization?

First, it might be helpful to better define what we mean when we talk about "big data". According to IBM, big data is data that is too big for analysis with traditional data processing application software or technology. Most big data analysts agree that in addition to volume or size of data, variety, veracity and the velocity of data each present challenges in their own rite. Volume of data refers to the volume of information created each day—and grows exponentially every day with the increased use of smart phones and other internet connected devices. Variety refers to different data types such as text, images, videos, voice, as well as structured and unstructured data. Veracity refers to the accuracy of the data. And finally velocity refers to the rate at which data is being created, consumed and retained-often in real-time.

Even though big data presents a unique set of challenges for businesses, it also provides the potential for a competitive edge for businesses who use that data well. Many organizations are moving towards implementing a big data strategy to get ahead of the competition and gain a deeper understanding of their customers' needs. Many companies are also leveraging big data analytics to gain a deeper understanding of the market as a whole and identify new business opportunities. By analyzing large amounts of data from many different sources, organizations can gain actionable insights into their operations and make data-driven decisions to support their business strategies and growth plans. In order to make the most of their big data initiatives, businesses need to begin by collecting the right data and developing a comprehensive plan for storing and managing their data. Once they have collected and analyzed their data, organizations can turn their findings into competitive advantages by discovering new ways to add value to their business and create value for customers.
